Particularly during the end of the calendar year, we are bombarded with messages, emails, and social media posts from countless nonprofits and organizations seeking our help. While I can’t speak for them all, the ones on this page are ones I have looked into in-depth, or are personally involved with. If you are one of those people who would like to give but don’t know where to start, maybe this list can help.

Anna’s Archive


Anna’s Archive is a non-profit project with two goals: (1) Preservation: Backing up all knowledge and culture of humanity. (2) Access: Making this knowledge and culture available to anyone in the world. Your money goes to servers, storage, and bandwidth. No money is going to any team members personally. They accept financial support in the form of memberships, one-time donations, and reoccurring donations.

Called to Serve CDC


Called to Serve (CTS) is an emerging socioeconomic community development entity (CDE) dedicated to the complete renewal, restoration and revitalization of underserved neighborhoods in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They accept financial support in the form of sponsorships, one-time donations, and reoccurring donations.

Data Visualization Society


The Data Visualization Society fosters a community where every member benefits from resources that support growth, refinement, and expansion of data visualization knowledge regardless of expertise level. The monthly run rate for DVS is $11k and the costs for their main programs and publication are considerably more.  They accept financial support in the form of individual and institutional memberships, sponsorships, and one-time donations.

Eastern Monroe Public Library


My personal library since I was a child where I continue to support in adulthood as an active member. Not only do they continue to provide dozens of free programming for the community, they continue to maintain the library’s physical and technological
infrastructure, details of which are included in their 2024 – 2030 strategic plan. They accept financial support in the form of one-time donations.

Foundation to Decrease World Suck


Founded by the likes of John and Hank Green, the Foundation to Decrease World Suck (FTDWS) engages tens of thousands of online video viewers and creators to generate awareness of hundreds of charities and to raise funds for charities. Since 2012 FTDWS has made grants of more than $10 million to dozens of charities. They accept financial support in the form of one-time donations and reoccurring donations.

The Internet Archive


For more than two and a half decades, the IA has collected, preserved, and shared digital cultural artifacts. Thanks to the generosity of patrons, the IA has grown from a small preservation project into a vast library that serves millions of people each year. Your donations go to help store over 99 petabytes of data, including 625 billion webpages, 38 million texts, and 14 million audio recordings. They accept financial support in the form of one-time donations and reoccurring donations.

Marching Arts Access, Safety, and Inclusion Network (MAASIN)


MAASIN coordinates a collective voice to address safety, accessibility, inclusivity, and equity in the marching arts. They advocate for the needs of diverse performer population, especially the needs of historically excluded and underrepresented groups. Your donations primarily go to operational costs—website, encrypted emails—as well as the March With Pride Scholarship, which has provided tens of thousands of dollars to help LGBTQIA+ members participate in the marching arts. They accept financial support in the form of one-time donations and reoccurring donations.

The Wikimedia Foundation is the nonprofit that hosts Wikipedia and our other free knowledge projects.
