Focus on Local Politics
Teo posted about this topic following the 2024 election results, but I think it’s worth bringing up again. In an era where national news dominates so much of the online landscape, it’s easy to feel like every story has a direct impact on your life. Yet, the sheer scale of these issues—and the distance between us and the decision-makers—often makes national news feel abstract. That abstraction can quickly turn into frustration.
One way to counteract this feeling is to shift your focus to local politics, where your actions can have a tangible impact. For instance, if your local library isn’t receiving enough funding, attending a city council meeting can help bring attention to the issue. If empty lots in your area are turning into dumping grounds, a town hall discussion might spark solutions. And if you’re considering donating funds, local nonprofits often deliver more immediate and visible results than large national organizations.
While patriotism has its place, there’s something uniquely powerful about taking pride in your community. It’s a way to support the people around you and remind yourself that your voice—and your actions—matter.
